Netflix’s House of Cards is a show about a scheming politico, Frank Underwood, who will do ANYTHING to save his Chair in the Oval. Many of the topnotch political leaders and even business leaders can relate to him. Underwood has many enemies but few friends, if any, but we have a lot to learn from him.
Lesson #1: “Do not start a war, you know you’re gonna lose.”
Do not set unrealistic targets like making your company a global giant within 6 months. Set realistic targets and take small steps that are achievable to reach them. Setting unrealistic targets always lead to disappointment because they cannot be achieved.
Lesson #2: “You are entitled to nothing.”
Just because you think that your idea is great, you don’t get entitled to rise high. You have to put in the work to make it work. Not only in the world of business, but also in life, you are entitled to nothing. You have to fight for it to get it.
Lesson #3: “We are nothing more or less than what we choose to reveal.”
You can apply this lesson to your marketing strategy, after all you are what you show yourself to be in your ads and posters. So, it is totally in your control as to what you want yourself to represent.
Lesson #4: “There’s no better way to overpower a trickle of doubt than with a flood of naked truth.”
People understand that things can go wrong in a business, nothing is perfect. So, if your customer complains about something or there is a misunderstanding, you should make up for that by explaining the entire true story and the customer will instantly know that you are telling the truth and be pacified or keep more patience till the matter is resolved.
Lesson #5: “Even Achilles was only as strong as his heel.”
You may have a perfect idea, a perfect marketing strategy but remember that even a tiny flaw (Example- an unhappy employee) can turn the tide against you. What will your perfect idea or your perfect marketing strategy do when your employee only goes out and sells your secrets.
Lesson #6: “In politics you either eat the baby or you are the baby.”
The world of business is no different that that of politics when it comes to wielding the power. It is a game of survival, hunt or be hunted. The most successful of conglomerates control how the economies work, how the governments govern and how the small scale business houses survive.
